The Monday Morning Class Series, Curated by Stacy Dawson Stearns, has fallen in love with the NIGHT. We changed. We bid adieu to the day. Fall with us into the dark comfort of evening as we continue the ongoing exchange of body-based creative practices led by teaching artists who practice within the phases of consciousness and creation. Nourish your practice and embrace Lunacy. #getheetoclass @MNCPieter
5/20 and 6/3: Jmy James Kidd // CONNECT AND CARE
I have been wanting to hold my Connect and Care practice in a class rather than a rehearsal setting for a while now. Please join me, I would love to know what you think and feel about this practice as a class!
I developed the practice as a way to have fun, smooth and efficient dance rehearsals. I value a supportive group dynamic in order to share time, space, ideas and ideally our most open loving selves with one another. This practice is something that I can’t ever do alone though I have tried many times. We come into the space from all different places and paces and from here we gather in a circle to do “quaker pot” — we share thoughts of the day, how are body mind spirits are doing, our names. I guide the group with the intention of encouraging every person say something so the group can hear the person’s voice, the person can hear their own voice in the group. I bring in a quote, sometimes questions and if needed talk about the structure of our time and the reasons behind this. once the talking feels a bit drained from the group I set a timer for our connect and care time (30 – 45min) where the rules are no verbal conversing and no devices. Every person listens to what your body needs and wants — people stretch, work-out, warm-up, take a nap, brush their teeth or…… The room tone always deepens, we need connect and care in our lives, I need connect and care in my life. There is very little to no time set-up quite like this, to connect to your body-mind-spirit in a group setting, no one is telling you what to do or how to do it. I follow this up with a short unifying exercise and then we WORK together on movement phrases because it feels good and is fun.
Jmy James Kidd lives and works in Los Angeles. she designs dances, spaces, gardens and outfits. She is the director of The Sunland Dancers and the founder of Pieter Performance Space. All of her work is inspired by the action by reaching out and touching interiorly and exteriorly. jmyjameskidd.com
