Led by Samuel Wentz, former dancer with the Trisha Brown Dance Company, this five-day workshop will focus on dynamic alignment, improvising as an ensemble, and interdependence. There will be a daily technique class followed by an improvisation-based workshop culminating into a showing on the last day. This intensive is designed for pre-professional dancers (17+) and professional dance and movement artists.
This contemporary technique class begins with simple, somatic-based exercises that allow us to locate, ground, and mobilize our parts into a coordinated whole. These newfound connections will be our groundwork for large moving phrases that require us to simplify and hone in on our own habitual movement patterns. Phrases are built upon the ideas of architecture, momentum, buoyancy and our relationship to gravity. The technique in this class is influenced and comprised of his studies with the Alexander Technique, Klein Technique, Gerald Casel, and the body of Trisha Brown’s work.
In the improvisation portion of this workshop, we will investigate how to move together as ensemble. Honing in on how to compose while developing and listening to an emergent, kinetic language, we will tackle such notions as time-bending, becoming conduits, and mapping/architecture. How do we move together? Is stealing/copying allowed? What is a conduit? Creating scores together over the course of the week, we will conclude with a showing of some things that we’ve made.
Samuel Wentz, originally from North Dakota, started his professional training at Idyllwild Arts Academy (’06), received his BFA from NYU Tisch School of the Arts (’09), and was awarded the Teaching Fellowship as an MFA candidate at Bennington College (’16). He has worked with the Trisha Brown Dance Company (2009-14), Wally Cardona & Jennifer Lacey, Mark Morris, Gerald Casel, Jmy James Kidd and Christopher Williams. He has taught master classes, nationally and internationally, in contemporary technique and repertory. He’s taught at places such as: P.A.R.T.S. (BE), U.W. Seattle, U.W. Milwaukee, U.C. Berkeley, U.A. Tucson, Yale, as well as teaching regular classes for the Trisha Brown Dance Company. His class is influenced by his studies with Barbara Mahler, Gerald Casel, and the work of Trisha Brown.
