Stacy Dawson Stearns curates this season of mojo training for Monday Morning Class at Pieter. These classes are offered with the intention of deepening and complicating the dance, movement, and artistic practices of the participants. Los Angeles takes things to a different level and dance is never just dance. Poetry is never just poetry. Pipes are never pipes. Induce your bodymind to go to the MOJO and get thee to class!

Classes are $15-20 sliding scale, OR you can take advantage of our 12 class pack for $120 and 6 class pack for $70 by paypaling (friends&family) and writing “MMCmojo2018 12 pack or MMCmojo2018 6 pack” in the comment line. Class packs only apply to MMC Mojo Technique classes.

Feb 19 // Michelle Sui // SONGS OF BODY
This workshop explores the synchronicity of voice and body as one whole. Participants will be encouraged to discover the depths of power within each of their individual voices and bodies while embracing their various idiosyncrasies, “songs,” “dances,” and mysteries. All will be guided through an intuitive approach to movement and singing, allowing the voice to travel and resonant through the whole body, and the body to respond. We may move from a place of noticing/“listening lab” to learning how to use these songs of body as means for composition. The workshop will be conducted with an emphasis on play; no prior singing or dancing experience necessary.

Michelle Sui is a Chinese-born, Los Angeles-raised multidisciplinary performer, composer, choreographer, and director. Her performing credits include the Park Avenue Armory, Rubin Museum of Art, Hammer Museum, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Her original works range from dance films, installations, and immersive theatrical compositions integrating theatre, ritual, music, dance, film, and interactive/new media and technology. These multimedia works have been presented in Germany, Italy, the Republic of Georgia, and extensively in New York City. Much of her work exists at the intersection of forms and draws upon body as geography, language in translation, and the politics and landscapes of femininity. Her ongoing research and teaching in the human voice, embodied vocal techniques, and women’s folk music traditions has taken her to Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and various autonomous regions of China. She is a finalist of the 2016 Leslie Scalapino Award for Innovative Women Performance Writers and a 2016 La MaMa Umbria NEXT GENERATION resident artist. In 2017 she founded Nü House, a curatorial platform that connects diverse feminist artists and communities around the world. Nü House is currently based in Los Angeles and facilitates conversations across borders and collaboration between artists, forms, and traditions.
