June 18, 25 // Michelle Sui // LOVE SONGS OF BODY
This workshop explores the unity of voice and body as one whole. Participants will be encouraged to discover the depths of power within each of their individual voices and bodies while embracing their various idiosyncrasies, “songs,” “dances,” and mysteries. All will be guided through an intuitive approach to movement and singing, allowing the voice to travel and resonant through the whole body, and the body to respond. The workshop will be conducted with an emphasis on play; no prior singing or dancing experience necessary.
18 // “Body as River”
25 // “Love Songs to the Body”
Michelle Sui is a Chinese-born, Los Angeles-raised multidisciplinary performer, composer, choreographer, and director. Her original works range from dance films, installations, and immersive theatrical compositions integrating theatre, ritual, music, dance, film, and interactive/new media and technology. These multimedia works have been presented in Germany, Italy, the Republic of Georgia, and extensively in New York City. Much of her work exists at the intersection of forms and draws upon body as geography, language in translation, and the politics and landscapes of femininity. Her ongoing research and teaching in the human voice, embodied vocal techniques, and women’s folk music traditions has taken her to Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and various autonomous regions of China. Michelle is a finalist of the 2016 Leslie Scalapino Award for Innovative Women Performance Writers and a 2016 La MaMa Umbria NEXT GENERATION resident artist. In 2017 she founded Nü House, a curatorial platform that connects diverse feminist artists and communities around the world.
