Jay Carlon – April 3, 10 & 17
This class will focus on integrating the attunement of external influences (architecture and space) with internal sensory embodiment. Participants will be asked to privilege imagination, tap into cellular awareness, practice doing-and-undoing, and rediscover primal awareness / presence. This class will conclude with an embodied series of disparate gestures, seeking logic in the physical body.
Jay Carlon is the co-artistic director of CARLON + LOLLIE, a site-sensitive performance company formed with collaborator Lindsey Lollie. Their work has been presented by Los Angeles Performance Practice, Automata LA, Electric Lodge, The Choreographers’ Performance Alliance, LA Dance Festival, and HomeLA. Jay has performed with the Metropolitan Opera, Palissimo, and Australia’s Strange Fruit. His solo choreography has been presented at 92nd Y, The CURRENT SESSIONS, Highways Performance Space, and ARC Pasadena. Jay has taught at UC Irvine, Long Beach State, Escuela Superior de Música y Danza de Monterrey, and ACDFA. April 24 & May 1 – Pia Vinson
My only intention in teaching the Monday Morning class at Pieter is to help the dancers free and express themselves through a gentle warm up followed by repertory, improvisation and composition exercises influences by various art forms and dance technique.
Pia Vinson was born and raised in France where she began her studies in tap dance and ballet at the age of 4 years old. When she was 13, she enrolled in ballet major at the National School of Tarn where she studied with Dominique Thouroude, Agnès Nolténius (William Forsythe Company) and Marie-José Redon (Paris Opéra Ballet) among many others. By the age of 18, she was working for the National Opera of Montpellier as a dancer/mime in La Traviata, Manon Lescaut and other opera productions. In 2011, Pia moved to New York City and enrolled in the Professional Training Program at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance with scholarship. There, she focused on developing her own choreographic vocabulary and her repertory has been showcased in various venues in France, New York City and has shared the stage with the Joffrey Ballet, Ballet Jazz Montréal and Martha Graham Company dancers. In June 2015, Pia joined the Mark Morris Dance Center as a program intern and assistant with Dance for Parkinson’s Disease. In January 2016, Pia choreographed Samantha Urbani’s music video: “U Know I Know” produced by Urban Outfitters and Legs Media. She later choreographed Urbani live set for SXSW 2016. Pia relocated to Los Angeles in May 2016 where she had the chance to perform for choreographer Radhouane El Meddeb at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions and with the Sunland Dancers at the Los Angeles Theatre for Night On Broadway 2017. Pia Vinson’s knowledge in ballet, modern dance and tap dance shaped her vocabulary but her passion for Gaga movement, African and Urban dancing highly influenced her work and gave her great versatility.
May 8 & 15 – Yanina Orellana
Flow: a movement practice
Yanina facilitates a space to explore creative movement that leads to a state of individual and collective flow. The workshop is grounded on “release” based movement, guided improvisations and group dynamic games. The participants will practice listening to bodies as a way to direct and synchronize energy. Ultimately, the activities will bring awareness to human connection through the commonality of the body and the radical effect of moving together as a group.Yanina Orellana is a teaching artist originally from Guadalajara, Mexico. Her work combines the possibilities of dance, theater and multimedia to create interactive experiences that deal with cultural identity and human connection online and offline. Currently, she is developing a dance vocabulary that merges Mexican pop culture dances, contemporary technique and the senses as pleasure. As a teaching artist, her philosophy emphasizes education as a process of humanization where the student is conscious of his/her agency to express, create and transform. Lately, she is inspired by limes, massive movements and the learning process of her students.
May 22, 29 & June 5 – Stacy Dawson Stearns
Stacy Dawson Stearns teaches: Trackers!
This class is for those who love to make things and those who love to find new facets within their physical practice. Stacy will share an approach called “tracking”: a technique for layering discoveries arising from experiential exploration with thematic content, psycho/emotional states of being, and texts (written, symbolic, and perceived). Each class will be a stand-alone session, yet participants who attend the series will get to go deep. Stacy will lead a developmentally-based warmup to open the body and lay down the first “track”. Participants will then be guided through a series of steps in order to determine a set of tracks that will be used in different ways, from divining character portraits to creating choreography and improvisational structures. We will move a lot, get and make cool diagrams, have fun, and share discoveries. This work is a great way to enter new phases of creation and shake off dusty ideas. I love teaching at Pieter and can’t wait to return to Monday mornings with this community! Questions about the class? At You’re W.O.W.?! (Feb 25, 2016). Upcoming: Stacy is taking her newest work, LOVE GASOLINE! to the Edinburgh Fringe this August with CAFT (Calarts Festival Theater program). She co-facilitates Sundays with Simone and Friends, an ongoing drop-in workshop with Simone Forti and Marbles Jumbo Radio at We Live In Space, and is currently writing and drawing a manual for the hybridized floor barre technique she has been teaching to her beautiful students at CalArts for the past decade!

Modern dance, somatics and repertory class
My interest lies in the choreographic force of knowledge attuned to the body, sensation, and emotion. I work to harmonize memory and the senses so that we can see, touch, and make sense of the stuff that comprises us, has conditioned us. Through performed catharsis and joyous surrender, I dance.Nickels Sunshine is a Los Angeles-based artist whose performances insist that the sensual is a form of knowledge and dance is not only seen but felt. Nickels teaches all levels of modern and contemporary dance technique, as well as courses in composition, dance studies, and dance pedagogy. Nickels is a Reiki Master in the Usui Tradition, a Kundalini Yoga teacher, and a facilitator of somatic practices, integrating information from: Body Mind Centering (B. Bainbridge Cohen), the Feldenkrais Method (M. Feldenkrais), Bartenieff Fundamentals (I. Bartenieff), the Alexander Technique (F.M. Alexander), Ideokinesis (M. Todd), and Authentic Movement (M. Starks Whitehouse).Their work has been presented by theatre and art organizations in Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and Internationally.
