November 5 and 12: Jessica Emmanuel // PROCESS AND RITUAL

Los Angeles-based movement artist Jessica Emmanuel will lead a movement master class titled Process & Ritual. Jessica will lead participants in exploring their own movement in relation to the creative process and rituals used in developing her own work which is both a matter of daily training and the starting point for new choreography. This workshop is designed to address the quality with which we move, and the ultimate source from which we create through improvisation, structured exercises, and partnering. We’ll create short choreographies that are specific and intuitive, stemming from points of tension in our present lives, ancestors and future.

The class will explore questions such as:

How does what we feel inform how we move?
How can focusing on what we feel reveal specific ways of moving informed by identity and personal history?
How does the body make a narrative?

Using text as an initial generating tool, participants will work individually and in groups to explore an emergent narrative through the building of a gestural vocabulary.

The class is open to any and all curious and exploratory minds. No movement experience necessary.
