Michelle Sui is a Chinese-born, Los Angeles-raised performing artist, composer, choreographer, and director. Her original works range from solo performances, dance films, site-specific installations,and experimental dance operas.These multimedia works have been presented in Germany, Italy, the Republic of Georgia, and the U.S and called “Raw Power” (Opera Mag, The Financial Times) and “Powerful” (Flavorwire). She is a 2016 finalist of the Leslie Scalapino Award for Innovative Women Performance Writers.
Sui’s ongoing research in the human voice and women’s folk music traditions has taken her to Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and various autonomous regions of China. She has taught workshops exploring the embodied voice internationally; in Los Angeles she frequently teaches these vocal workshops at Pieter as part of the Monday series curated by Stacy Dawson Stearns. www.michellesui.com @michelle.sui
