Pieter Parking Space Artist Residency application is LIVE!

It is with great excitement that we announce the launch of the Pieter Parking Space Artist Residency application in partnership with The Box LA

Pieter is accepting applications for artist residencies at Pieter Parking Space, located in The Box gallery’s parking lot in the Arts District! Residencies will offer performing and movement-based artists opportunities to reconnect to a rehearsal practicedevelop site-specific work, and discover the joys of having a live audience amidst the social and spatial transformations of the last 2 years.

About Pieter Parking Space

Pieter Parking Space is an outdoor, wheelchair-accessible, sprung wooden dance platform with multiple potential configurations located in The Box’s gated and spacious parking lot. Reminiscent of Pieter founder Jmy James Kidd’s Gold Stage, hosted at The Hammer Museum as part of Made in LA 2014, this platform will be home to multiple residencies from December 2021 through May 2022. Residencies will culminate with the opening of Knees, Schools, Urges, an exhibition in The Box gallery uplifting LA’s dance history, curated by Jennie MaryTai Liu.

Pieter Parking Space is made possible thanks to our partnership with The Box gallery as well as platform design and construction by Pieter Community member John Emison and a materials donation from our friends at NAVEL.

About artist residencies

Pieter Parking Space residencies are 6 weeks long and provide artists with access to 10 hours of secured, outdoor rehearsal space each week. Rehearsal space includes a supportive dance platform (4 feet by 12 feet) composed of marley and wood with modular ramps for wheelchair access. During rehearsal hours, artists will have access to The Box’s parking, WiFi, kitchen and bathroom, as well as overnight storage space. At the close of each residency, artists will have the option to share their work in up to 2 public programs, which may take the form of performances, open rehearsals or artist talks, supported by Pieter’s staff. Support includes promoting programs on Pieter and The Box’s platforms, providing professional photography documentation, and coordinating tech needs.

The first two artists in residence are Ana María Alvarez and Stacy Dawson Stearns, our 2020 Pieter Dancemaker Grantees. The remaining four slots, running from December 2021 to May 2022, will be selected by a committee who will carefully review applications from the public. Committee members will be prioritizing applicants: (1) who have a relationship to LA’s dance and performance communities; (2) who have faced challenges in connecting to their practice throughout the pandemic; and (3) whose exploratory work would benefit from access to rehearsal space & time.

If you have any questions or access needs, please contact pieterpasd@gmail.com!

This program is made possible in part by grants from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture, and the California Arts Council.
