Energy Flows in the Garden: Taijiquan with Joyce Lu

  • El Sereno Community Garden 5466 Huntington Drive North Los Angeles, CA, 90032 United States (map)
Event flyer with blue background with pink and salmon gradient. An image of Joyce in deep side squat with one arm extended. Text reads "Energy Flows in the Garden. Taijiquan at El Sereno Community Garden with Joyce Lu"

Cost: $10-25 sliding scale per session, no one turned away for lack of funds. Payable via Venmo (@pieter-space) or exact cash in-person.

Description: Spend some restorative time nourishing your body! Plants release hormones that relieve stress, improve immunity, and elevate our mood. When we practice 氣功qigong and 太極拳 taijiquan together in nature it boosts the effects of these already potent body-mind-movement practices.

*If you can't make these classes, but you're interested in getting involved with the Pieter garden plot, please contact Joyce:  joyce@joycelu.com

Bio: Joyce Lu started practicing Wu-style taijiquan with Patricia Leong in Hawai’i in 1996. From 2000-2007 she studied Yang and Chen styles with Hong Mei Zhang at Pacific Wushu in San Francisco, and she currently studies with An Guang Sun at the Tai Chi Academy of Los Angeles in Alhambra. Joyce is also a certified Feldenkrais Method practitioner and she integrates this work into her taiji classes for seniors at Villa Gardens in Pasadena. She is also pursuing a certification in Tai Chi for Health which is a methodology created by Paul Lam. Joyce has also been enjoying learning life lessons from tending the Pieter garden plot at ESCG.

What to expect: We will practice both the more internal simple movement-breath-energy cultivation practices of 氣功qigong and also learn the basic movements in the 24 Yang-style taijiquan set which is the slow-motion version of actual fighting/martial movements.

Safety protocols: Masks are optional for this event and our Button Buddy system will be used.

Accessibility note:
The garden and restroom on-site are wheelchair accessible. Most of the movements can be adapted to a sitting position.

Please contact pieterpasd@gmail.com for any access questions or needs.
