Description: dance practice is a ballet class for anyone, at any level.

Whether you’re a dancer, a “former” dancer, or just someone who wants to move, dance practice is for everyone — especially if your relationship with ballet is complicated.

The goal of dance practice is that we gather and (re)discover the joy of ballet together, while actively rejecting all the unhealthy/problematic things that come with it: the classism and ableism, the body stuff, the gender stuff, the self-worth stuff, the white supremacy upon which ballet was built.

Celine will hold a safe and sacred space for us to dance together, learn from each other, and practice kindness and patience with our bodies. Her teaching philosophy values safety and sustainability rather than aesthetic or achievement, and she will give movement modifications for varying levels: you always have the option to choose what is best for you.

All are welcome. dance practice was created to empower you to find autonomy in movement and work toward rejecting the exclusionary aspects of this form. Ballet is but a tool; you can take what you like and leave the rest. aspects of this form. Ballet is but a tool; you can take what you like and leave the rest.

Dance Practice LA

What to expect: This class is 90 minutes. It begins with a warm-up to prepare our bodies safely for the steps ahead; then moves through a structure based on but not beholden to a ballet class, with smaller actions at the barre moving into larger actions in the center. There is always room for curiosity and exploration, and we’ll check in with each other and our bodies regularly to ensure a safe and kind practice. Sometimes we’ll learn new steps; sometimes we’ll learn choreography.

Bio: Celine Sauquillo Davis is a journalist, designer, & artist whose work is largely informed by lifelong movement research. She aims to tell the story of the artist through process and context, while holding true to the integrity and intention of the work itself. Celine is an alumna of USC Kaufman’s inaugural class and has performed works by Grimes, Forsythe, Cerrudo, Kylian, and more. Currently, you can find her dancing with Bodies in Play, and in digital and print at Nom de Pixel, La Dance Chronicle, and more.
