In honor of Juneteenth, Pride Month and Black Music Month, we invite you to Pieter Performance Space to explore the Sissies: Something Perfect Between Ourselves Exhibition experience.
This powerful project honors the legacy of Black Queer parties and clubs across Los Angeles - spaces that have long served as sanctuaries for activism, joy, care, and creative expression. As many of these vital spaces have closed or disappeared, Sissies responds to an urgent need to document their histories while creating new environments for community connection and artistic exploration.
Blending film, fashion, movement, and sound, Sissies transforms Pieter into a gallery exhibition with a series of immersive, occupiable sculptural environments - each functioning as a living time capsule inspired by these collected narratives. Audiences are invited not only to witness but to inhabit these spaces, engaging directly with the histories and imaginations they hold.
Sissies: Something Perfect Between Ourselves is led by curator and choreographer Bernard Brown, Artistic Director of bbmoves, in collaboration with co-creators Malachi Middleton and Du’Ron Fisher (Defacto X). The project is presented in partnership with Pieter Performance Space and is supported by the Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts Infinite Expansion Grant.
On June 20, the gallery will transition into a live dance performance experience culminating in a celebratory party featuring DJ sets from Black Bass Collective and NoPrxssure, transforming Pieter into a dynamic space of collective joy and community.
