Pieter Performance Space is now accepting applications for our 2024 Artist-in-Residence!

Applications are due by Friday, May 3rd at 11:59pm PST

This Pieter/WeHo Arts Grant Residency offers BIPOC LGBTQIA+ performing and movement-based artists the opportunity to present new or updated work at Plummer Park’s Great Hall in West Hollywood as part of a Pieter program on Saturday, September 7th 2024. Plummer Park’s Great Hall is a historic location where the Los Angeles chapter of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) met weekly from 1987-1996 to organize candlelight vigils, “die-ins,” and direct actions during the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In honor of this history, this residency invites artists to engage with traditions of queer disruption and creation in the ongoing context of mass sickness and social abandonment.

About the residency:

The Pieter/WeHo Arts Grant Residency will provide one artist with studio time and a performance stipend to develop a new or updated work in July and August in Pieter’s 4000 square foot ballroom in Lincoln Heights. The residency will culminate in a public performance in Plummer Park’s Great Hall on Saturday, September 7th alongside a performance by 2023 Artist-in-Residence Ryan O’Byrne and collaborator Camila Camaleón.

Pieter will provide the artist-in-residence with the following:

Up to 25 hours of studio time to develop new work at Pieter in Lincoln Heights in July & August 2024
★ A $2500 artist stipend
★ Pieter staff support with marketing, production, and access service coordination
★ Professional photography and documentation of performance

The Artist-In-Residence will be asked to:
★ Create and share a new or updated work as part of a public performance at Plummer Park on Saturday September 7, 2024
★ Meet with Pieter staff to coordinate a rehearsal and production schedule
★ Coordinate and communicate all production and marketing needs in a timely manner

Accessibility note:

Pieter is committed to accessibility for all bodies. Rehearsals will take place at Pieter Performance Space, located in Lincoln Heights on the 2nd floor, up one flight of stairs or via a password-protected elevator. Two all-gender restrooms are shared with floormates. Each restroom has one stall accessible for mobility device users. The dance studio and restrooms are free of steps and other mobility barriers. Please note that there are no automated doors in the building.

The culminating performance will take place in Great Hall, Plummer Park, in West Hollywood. The historic property was constructed in 1938 and includes an indoor wood stage with steps, and is not accessible. Paved pathways connect the parking lot to the Great Hall. The indoor space, outdoor courtyard, and gendered restrooms are accessible for wheelchairs and mobility devices.
